One of my hopes for this newsletter was to share more of the unique, creative things happening around the election. Finding artists/makers/bakers who are creating stuff for election day has not been as easy as I thought it would be.
Social media and YouTube are filled with jazzy graphics and text, and on Sunday, the New York Times published a story about how the Future Forward PAC is creating and testing ads.
Ad makers produce roughly 20 potential commercials for every spot that ever airs. And Future Forward has conducted nearly four million voter surveys since Ms. Harris entered the race — and more than 10 million since January.
I am interested in the human side of campaigning. I saved a box of some of the things that supporters made and delivered to the Kerry/Edwards campaign office in 2004. I’ve worked for campaigns where we screen-printed on old shirts because we couldn’t afford to order t-shirts. My search for the campaign crafters continues, but I wanted to look at a different type of campaign coverage.
Rob Rogers has been a political cartoonist in Pittsburgh for 40 years. Outside of politics, his cartoons do a lovely job capturing some of the most Pittsburgh moments. In 2018, he was fired from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette for his cartoons that were critical of President Trump. I love following Rob Rogers's work on Instagram. I know that most of us are not reading a physical newspaper every morning. I miss reading the comics section (and the Dear Abby column I read every morning before school.) I was curious to see if other cartoonists are sharing their work on Instagram. (If you are looking for the perfect card to send to a Pittsburgh friend, check out Rob Roger’s designs at YinzerCards.com.)
Last week, the Syracuse Institute for Democracy, Journalism and Citizenship hosted an event with The Herb Block Foundation, POLITICO: Cartoonist Event – MAGA Memes and Momala: Political Cartoonists Take on 2024 and More!
You can watch the video of the event on CSPAN here.

A note about the cartoons: I did not start making this list to share anti-Trump cartoons; I was curious to see how cartoonists were also talking about Kamala Harris. I have looked at the Instagram accounts for all of these artists, and almost all of the posts are about President Trump.
